Senate president Hun Sen has reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to supporting peace restoration efforts in Ukraine, stressing that the Kingdom attaches “great importance” to peace.

He made the remarks in a May 2 letter to Ruslan Stefanchuk, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, the parliament of Ukraine. He expressed his thanks to the chairman, who congratulated him on his election as Senate president in early April.

“As a post-conflict country, Cambodia attaches great importance to peace, stability, and the promotion of dialogue to resolve conflicts and differences,” Hun Sen said in the letter, circulated on May 3.

He noted that the Kingdom respects international law, including the principles enshrined in the UN charter, and upholds the rules-based international order by strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

“Cambodia remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace in Ukraine,” he said.

He added that he was looking forward to working with Stefanchuk to enhance cooperation between the two legislative bodies for the mutual interests of the two nations.

Yang Peou, secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, told The Post that Hun Sen’s letter highlights Cambodia’s growing role in participating in finding solutions to global issues.

He explained that in the past, Cambodia was seen as a “victim” country, with the world and international organisations, especially the UN, helping to find solutions to the Kingdom’s woes, but it is now actively involved in seeking out global solutions and maintaining world order.

Peou said the letter also showed that Cambodia adheres to international law and its multilateral role, and has a clear diplomatic policy without leaning to the past or any ideology.

“Cambodia’s positions are based on international law and national law, which indicates its clear policy in international affairs.

“Cambodia wants more and more world peace and more stability, because it experienced their loss during the Cold War. Fortunately, this situation was brought to a close in 1998,” he said.

In his congratulatory letter to Hun Sen, Stefanchuk expressed his confidence that during Hun Sen’s tenure, Ukrainian-Cambodian inter-parliamentary contacts will continue to develop both at the bilateral level and within the frameworks of the ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Assembly, the Inter-parliamentary Union, and other international platforms.

“We remember with appreciation your principled position on the condemnation of the Russian aggression against Ukraine and count on further support for international efforts to restore a just peace in Ukraine and to ensure stability in the world,” he said.

In the letter, Stefanchuk also invited Hun Sen to pay an official visit to Ukraine.
