A 2-year-old girl died and her sister, 4, sustained serious injuries in a blaze in southern Kratie province’s Chhlong district on December 10, provincial police said.

Police said the fire broke out when a bottle made of unspecified material that was filled with petrol tipped over and broke, and the flammable liquid ignited when it leaked on a lit gas stove where dinner was being prepared.

The father, 30, and mother, 28, escaped with minor injuries, and $5,000 in cash was destroyed by the flames, in Chheuteal Phluos Krom village of Kanhchor, Chhlong’s northernmost commune.

Kanhchor commune police prevented the blaze from spreading to a nearby house, aided by a single fire engine.
