Four suspected kidnappers were transported to Phnom Penh on Tuesday after National Police serious crimes bureau officials and Banteay Meanchey provincial police arrested them at the Poipet City Hotel in Poipet town the previous day.

Chea Vibol, deputy director of the serious crime bureau under the Ministry of Interior, said the four suspects were the 29-year-old ringleader, two accomplices aged 28 and 47 and a 23-year-old driver.

A Lexus RX300 SUV suspected to have been used in the kidnap, which was carried out in Phnom Penh on Monday, was seized.

“I have not questioned the suspects yet. My team is transporting them back to Phnom Penh,” Vibol said.

The suspects kidnapped a man in Phnom Penh and took him to Poipet, a police officer with the Banteay Meanchey provincial serious crime bureau, who wished not to be named, said on Tuesday.

After receiving information from the Ministry of Interior serious crimes bureau, his team worked with a special ministry task force to find the men, he said.

Upon identifying the suspects, the task force detained the four at the Poipet City Hotel at around 11:30am on Monday.

He said black cloth was taped to the victim’s head to cover his eyes, while a belt was fastened around his neck.

The suspects kidnapped the victim in an attempt to get money from a relative living in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district, but the relative reported the matter to the police instead, he added.
