Authorities in Kampong Cham province’s Chamkar Leu district have suspended the operation of Hun Sen Chamkar Leu High School from September 21-30 after two teachers and three students there were detected with Covid-19.
In a letter dated September 20 and approved by district governor Sam Piseth on September 22, Hun Sen Chamkar Leu High School principal Reth Narin said the current situation at the school is one “remarkable” risk.
The letter said that on September 17, all teachers underwent Covid-19 testing and two were positive. Other teachers who had been in contact with the duo are now in home quarantine.
“Three students were positive after the first test, while the others were waiting for the second test. We are currently conducting further tracing. In the meanwhile, we decided to temporarily close the school for 10 days and will reopen it on October 1,” it said.
Public and private schools were allowed to reopen in stages nationwide more than a week ago. All schools are required to adhere to certain conditions, both in terms of sanitation and the implementation of the Ministry of Health’s safety measures as well as the standard operating procedures (SOPs) introduced by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.
Education ministry spokesman Ros Soveacha told The Post on September 22 that the ministry will continue to work with the municipal and provincial administrations to facilitate and orient the teaching and learning process. The ministry will continue to place priority on improving the safety and health of students and educators in line with the measures of the education and health ministries.
He said the education ministry had introduced seven-point directive on the management of public and private educational institutions.
According to the September 13 directive, the school management must take the temperature of students, staff, educators and others before entering the campus. Students and staff and everyone must wear masks that can prevent the spread of Covid-19 and be disposed of in a bin after use.
The ministry also recommends frequent hand washing with clean water and soap or sanitiser while on campus, before entering the classroom and eating, after coughing or sneezing and after using the toilet.
The ministry also recommends safe distancing in all classrooms, including at least 1.5m apart from one desk and chairs to another, and learning in a group of less than 15 students per class.
