Prime Minister Hun Sen requested that Australia continue to provide Cambodia with assistance in demining to help Cambodia achieve its goal of a “Mine-Free Cambodia by 2025.”
Hun Sen met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on November 12 on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Phnom Penh.
Following the meeting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a press release that the two spoke highly of their growing relationship and cooperation in all areas between the two countries.
The release said the two prime ministers discussed efforts to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. Hun Sen offered his appreciation to the Australian Government for its contribution to the peace process in Cambodia and continued assistance to the socio-economic development of the Kingdom through assistance in various fields, including education, agriculture, infrastructure, demining, and health. He highlighted the donation of nearly 3 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines and medical equipment for particular praise.
“Hun Sen asked Australia to continue its assistance with demining to help Cambodia reach its goal for ‘A Mine-Free Cambodia by 2025’,” it added.
The two Leaders welcomed the progress of the comprehensive strategic partnership between ASEAN and Australia. Hun Sen also expressed his appreciation for Australia’s support of Cambodia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2022.
On November 12, Hun Sen also led the ASEAN-Australia summit with Albanese, during which Hun Sen expressed optimism that the partnership between ASEAN and Australia will grow stronger and provide benefits to the peoples of the bloc and of Australia.
Hun Sen appreciated Australia for their unwavering support for ASEAN Centrality through their active participation in other ASEAN-led mechanisms. He welcomed Australia’s commitment in supporting ASEAN integration, and the implementation of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement.
“These excellent achievements reflect our commitment. We will endeavour to elevate our dialogue to another level,” he said.
