Youth from the Red Cross of 11 countries will plant 1,000 trees on about 1ha of land on the occasion of the 2nd youth forum of the National Association of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Southeast Asia, which will be held in Cambodia this September.

Men Neary Sopheak, first deputy secretary-general of the Cambodian Red Cross (CRC), said the four-day forum, from September 17-20, will be focused on climate change, which is one of the world’s most pressing issues.

“This is why we will hold the tree planting session,” she said.

She noted that the tree planting will take place at the Cambodian Buddhist Centre, with the aim to promote the environment, the Cambodian Buddhist cultural centre, and interfaith diversity participation, as there are many different religions in the ASEAN region.

In late March, CRC secretary-general Pum Chantyny instructed the provincial CRC branches to update their action plans for the year to address climate change.

The CRC is one of more than 300 humanitarian organisations who are signatories to the climate charter.
