Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC) retain their excellent start from the first five matches of the season in the 2022 Cambodian League 2, grabbing another three points from their win over Soltilo Angkor. This meant the only all-Cambodian team reclaimed their top spot on the table –thanks to early leaders Koh Kong FC’s failure to take maximum points from ISI Dangkor Senchey, with a 1-1 draw.

After reclaiming their perch atop the league, EDC head coach Tum Saray told The Post “This is a result we are pleased with – thanks to the three points we are in command of the league again.”

However, the former Cambodia national defender had concerns about the big match-ups with the other top three teams that lay ahead for his team. They will play Asia Euro United on April 10, before they welcome Prey Veng FC on April 24 and then visit Koh Kong on March 26. This year’s season requires all 12 teams to play double rounds.

“We must focus on each match. We have to face strong teams with foreign players like these three – they performed well in their last two or three games and we cannot underestimate them. We need to maintain our strength as a team, whether playing at home or away. We have to get good results,” said Saray.

EDC – who were eliminated from the Cambodian Premier League last season – still adhere to their principle of using purely Khmer players, while other teams use up to three foreign players to help their squad. Despite this, EDC has set winning promotion to the top flight league as their goal for the season.

“Our team still maintains the principle of using local players because our management wants to give young Cambodians more opportunities to play and win selection to the national squad. At the same time, the main goal of EDC is to compete for a shot at getting back into the premier league,” added Saray.

In other matches, Prey Veng FC beat hosts Asia Euro 2-0 to move up to second place with 12 points – down one from EDC but one ahead of Koh Kong – while National Police FC defeated Next Step FC 2-0 to move up to 4th place with 10 points.

National Football Academy defeated Siem Reap FC 3-0 to sit on 9 points with Asia Euro and Tbong Khmum beat Banteay Meanchey FC 4-1 to stand in 8th place with 6 points, ahead of ISI Dangkor Senchey on 1 point.

Keisuke Honda’s Soltilo Angkor became the only team to lose five games in a row.
