The Heritage Group announced on January 15 that it has acquired a majority stake in a pioneering Cambodian enterprise dedicated to transforming coconut shells and other agricultural waste into sustainable charcoal products.

Khmer Green Charcoal Co., Ltd. (KGC) has been operating since 2012. Its sustainable charcoal aims to reduce deforestation and create positive social change, which aligns neatly with the Heritage Group’s goals.

“Since its establishment in 2012, KGC has emerged as a leader in sustainable charcoal production, reducing deforestation, lowering CO2 emissions and creating job opportunities for underprivileged communities,” explained a January 15 joint statement from Heritage and KCG.

The Heritage Group, a diversified Cambodian business group, is dedicated to fostering sustainable and innovative businesses that contribute to the nation’s economic and environmental progress.

“Charcoal has long been part of Cambodian cooking culture. Through KGC’s innovative approach, it can now be produced sustainably without harming the environment,”

It also noted that KGC was recently honoured at the Khmer Enterprise Awards 2024, for its exceptional contribution to the Kingdom’s business community,” said the release.

The statement added that Heritage Group aims to guide KGC into its next phase of growth by enhancing production capacity and expanding its market presence both locally and internationally.

“At Heritage Group we believe innovation and sustainability must go hand in hand. Our investment in KGC reflects this commitment and we are excited to support its growth as a model for responsible business in Cambodia,” said Heritage chairman Chan Sokheang.

According to the statement, the new partnership will enable KGC to scale its operations, through investment in new technologies to meet increased demand. It will also be able to extend its market reach, by strengthening its presence in domestic markets and exploring new international opportunities.

“This collaboration marks an exciting new chapter for KGC. Heritage Group’s vision and expertise bring immense value, paving the way for a bright future,” said KGC founder Carlo Figà Talamanca.

“This investment is more than a business transaction; it’s a commitment to a sustainable future. Together, we will pave the way for a greener and more prosperous Cambodia,” added Sokheang.
