Although no recent cases of counterfeit US dollars have been reported, the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has issued a reminder for the public to stay vigilant and assist in preventing the circulation of counterfeit US currency.
According to an announcement released today, the NBC reminder is in line with recommendations from the US Secret Service, as the US dollar continues to circulate widely in Cambodia.
The NBC has instructed banking and financial institutions to confiscate counterfeit US dollar notes from customers without compensation and submit them to the US Secret Service, accompanied by reports for further investigation.
“Banking and financial institutions must retain information about the identity of customers involved in the circulation of counterfeit US dollar notes and provide this information to the NBC. The public must exercise caution and thoroughly inspect US dollar notes before accepting them. In cases of suspected counterfeit notes, the public is urged to report them to the NBC,” it said.
The NBC also encourages all banking and financial institutions to educate their customers on how to identify authentic US dollar notes to contribute to efforts in curbing the use of counterfeit currency.
While there have been no recent reports of counterfeit US dollar incidents in Cambodia, Facebook users have taken to the NBC’s official page to express opinions and call for clearer guidance.
Some users have urged the NBC to share methods for identifying counterfeit US dollar notes, while others encouraged the public to revert to using the Khmer Riel instead.
