Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul highlighted the significant growth in Cambodia’s e-commerce and digital trade sectors and called for solutions to the challenges faced by business owners.

She made the remarks while presiding over the opening ceremony of the "Cambodia's Digital Economy and Engagement with E-DISC (ERIA Digital Innovation and Sustainable Economy Centre)" workshop today, September 2, in Phnom Penh, according to a ministry press release.

It noted that the event, organised by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), focused on the future of the country’s digital economy and how the Kingdom can effectively utilise resources available at E-DISC to harness the potential of digital technologies for trade and economic enhancement.

“The e-commerce and digital trade sectors in Cambodia are currently experiencing significant growth following the Covid-19 pandemic,” Nimul was quoted as saying in the release, underscoring the dynamism and resilience of the country's economy.

“This sector is driven by innovative entrepreneurs, a young population and increasing levels of digital interconnectedness,” she added.

The government introduced the Cambodia Digital Economy and Society Policy Framework 2021-2035 and the Cambodia Digital Government Policy 2022-2035 to leverage digital technology for societal and economic efficiency.

She said the two documents outline five key goals: digital government and citizens, digital economy and business, e-commerce and innovation systems, digital infrastructure and financial technology, as well as ensuring digital system trustworthiness.

To fully capitalise on the digital revolution through E-DISC, Nimul offered recommendations for improving collective understanding of digital ecosystems in Cambodia and other ASEAN countries, and for promoting policy innovation that supports the growth and development of industries and firms within the digital economy.

She urged “addressing the challenges that business owners face” through practical initiatives, applying the knowledge and skills gained from the workshop to adapt to the broader digital economic ecosystem.

The workshop was attended by representatives from various ministries, stakeholders and ERIA, according to the press release.
