Royal Group Power (RGP), a subsidiary of local conglomerate Royal Group, has forged a partnership with TotalEnergies, a French-owned multi-energy sales and production company, to drive renewable power projects and decarbonisation initiatives within Cambodia.

The collaboration emerges at a time when the government is amplifying its focus on solar and wind power to meet escalating energy demands.

Kith Meng, chairman and CEO of Royal Group, and Liang Ting Wee, president of TotalEnergies Asia Pacific and Middle East and country chair Singapore, sealed the deal with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on October 25 and made public on October 30.

“I’m delighted to delve into sustainable power projects with TotalEnergies,” said Meng.

“[The two companies] are poised to be formidable allies, leveraging our collective knowledge, skills and execution capabilities. The foundation of trust and strong partnerships, evident in my other ventures, is beginning to take shape with [them]. I anticipate many shared successes ahead,” he added.

Liang said TotalEnergies aligns with Singapore’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. To this end, he said they are intensively advancing their multi-energy approach, providing reliable, cost-effective and cleaner low-carbon solutions for customers’ energy transitions.

“In Singapore, we back decarbonisation through electric vehicle [EV] charging, endorsing low-carbon marine fuels and supplying integrated rooftop solar solutions. Our innovative spirit drives us, and we remain committed to collaborating with partners for a collective energy future,” he said.

In November 2022, RGP signed an exclusive agreement with Singapore’s Keppel Energy (KE) to jointly explore renewable energy project developments in Cambodia.

The projects aim for a total installed capacity of approximately 2.5GW, with about 40 per cent designated for export to the city-state through high-voltage underwater transmission lines. KE is the intended purchaser, as per a joint release.

The agreement was formalised at an event presided over by Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Pornmoniroth. KE operates as a subsidiary of Keppel Infrastructure Holdings (KI), itself a direct arm of the Singapore-listed Keppel Corp.

Established in 1993, TotalEnergies Cambodia is a full subsidiary of TotalEnergies France. With about 140 staff members, including two expatriates, it stands out as one of the few international oil firms in the country.

In October 2009, they broadened their Cambodian operations by obtaining a conditional agreement with the government for offshore oil and gas exploration in the Overlapping Claims Area III (OCA-III). This area in the Gulf of Thailand is jointly managed by Cambodia and Thailand for oil and natural gas exploration, according to the company’s website.
