Vietnam is affirming its position as an attractive destination for international medical tourists.

A survey by Indochina Research (Vietnam) – a leading regional market research company, has provided insights into the trends in the use of medical services by foreigners visiting  Vietnam.

The development of medical tourism not only shows the advances of the domestic medical system but also paves the way for Vietnam to become a regional medical hub. As more tourists choose Vietnam's medical services, it is essential to understand its leading medical facilities and healthcare trends.

Expertise of medical professionals - top priority of foreign visitors

Indochina Research's survey collected data from more than 300 selected foreigners across four major cities, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Can Tho, through online and offline methods. The survey targeted foreigners aged 18 and above who have used or heard about medical facilities in Vietnam.

The findings show that when choosing a medical facility, most respondents first consider the expertise of medical professionals (53%), followed by the infrastructure quality (48%) and patient care services (40%). The order of these considerations is consistent across the surveyed cities, though there is some minor variation at the local level.

The survey also indicates that over the last two years, most foreigners (88%) have primarily used medical services for health check-ups (48%), dental care (39%) and general medical consultations (38%). 87% of respondents say that over the next 6-12 months, they will continue using Vietnam’s medical services, with the greatest demand for dental care (59%) and regular health check-ups (58%).

Notably, there is a growing demand for high-quality and affordable medical services. Compared to other countries in the region, Vietnam’s medical services possess a competitive edge thanks to their reasonable prices and a robust system of private hospitals, which is the key driver for the recent boom of medical tourism in Vietnam.

Which hospital in Vietnam is the most well-known to foreigners?

As shown by the survey, Vinmec Healthcare System (Vinmec) is the most recognised medical facility by foreigners in Vietnam, at 67%, much higher than other hospitals and clinics. In particular, Vinmec’s brand recognition ranks first in Hanoi (80%) and Da Nang (78%), affirming its position in high-quality healthcare.

Future medical tourism in Vietnam

Given the growing demand for medical examination and treatment among foreign tourists, Vietnam will potentially become a key medical tourism hub in the region, offering high-quality and affordable healthcare services that attract more international patients. To attract international tourists to Vietnam for medical services, hospitals and medical facilities should further improve their service quality, infrastructure and access for foreign patients to maintain this growth.

Indochina Research’s survey both identifies the trends of medical tourism and provides valuable data so that hospitals can adjust their services to better satisfy the needs of international patients. Given recent progress, Vietnam can definitely become an attractive regional and global hub of medical tourism.
