The Helpcode Drowning Prevention Program is a competency-based initiative that teaches school age children how to stay safe in and around water, provides training on safe rescue and resuscitation skills and teaches children how to swim for survival.
In 2022, more than 3,000 children between the ages of six and 16 participated in the Helpcode Drowning Prevention Program, with girls making up more than half the participants.
Children in the Kingdom grow up and live in environments where there is water all around all the time. In Cambodia, WHO and UNICEF report drowning as a silent epidemic with drowning being a major cause of injury for all children following infancy.
Helpcode, with technical support from SWIM Cambodia, has been facilitating a Drowning Prevention Program in the Kingdom since 2019, working in 40 communities in Sihanoukville, Kampot and the surrounding islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem.
