Sihanoukville's First Plogging Event a Triumph
Sihanoukville's first-ever plogging event, organised by Six Senses Krabey Island, was held successfully in Ream on World Environment Day, June 5. The event aimed to safeguard the natural ecology of Ream and cleanse the beach environment.
The concept of plogging, which originated in Sweden, is a combination of jogging with picking up litter. Merging the Swedish verbs plocka upp (pick up) and jogga (jog) gives the new Swedish verb plogga, from which the word plogging derives.
Raising Awareness Through Plogging
This innovative approach was used to raise public awareness about Ream's natural surroundings. The pick-up and run route started at the Ream Roundabout of Preah Shiva and Princess Omavatey, finishing at the statues of Preah Thong (Kaundinya I) and Neang Neak (Queen Soma). The total distance was roughly five kilometres.
Upon receiving the instructions, all participants eagerly made their way to the designated starting point to begin plogging. While jogging, individuals from each team diligently collected litter along the route, meticulously tidying up their surroundings by repeatedly bending down and picking up garbage.
A Collective Effort for Ream's Ecosystem
Following calculations and weighing, a staggering 310.2 kg of rubbish was collected during the event. Each participant received an honorary medal, symbolising their collective effort to protect Ream's ecosystem. By taking part in this event, SNC Sihanoukville New City aims to encourage practical steps to clean up the Ream ecosystem and make a small but significant contribution to its preservation.
