An image of a fish of the family Balistidae with human-like features made its rounds on social media after a Twitter user snapped a photo of his catch in Malaysia.

The original post has received 675 comments, 8,200 retweets and more than 14,000 likes as of Tuesday.

Astonishing and baffling netizens, it has spurred a flurry of memes and other photoshopped images based on creative takes on the unusual fish.

There are some 40 different species of the fish – commonly known as “triggerfish” – which are normally found in Indo-Pacific waters and often spotted in Southeast Asian countries. They are known for their big lips, human-like teeth and strong jaw capable of ripping through shellfish.

Triggerfish tend to be solitary but can be seen in pairs. Males of some species may keep a harem of female mates.
