The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), in partnership with AIA Life Insurance, is organising the “AIA Pink Run” to celebrate the accomplishments of the recently concluded 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games. The event also aims to raise awareness and support for breast cancer.
During a September 5 press conference, NOCC announced that the run will take place on the morning of October 22, and will start in front of Botum Vatey Pagoda in Phnom Penh. The celebratory run will offer three distances: 10km, 5km and 2.5km, catering to various fitness levels.
NOCC secretary-general Vath Chamroeun explained that the run aims to celebrate not only the accomplishments of both the recent international sporting events hosted by the Kingdom, but also the successful partnership between the Cambodia SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) and AIA.
He expected many people to join the run. NOCC intends to extend invitations to Cambodian athletes, with a special focus on SEA Games medallists. However, the participation from national athletes might be limited, as a significant number are currently engaged in training activities in China.
“Around 100 athletes remain in-country. We plan to extend invitations to medallists and non-medallists, as well as athletes from other sports. They played pivotal roles in both events, so it’s essential that we orchestrate this event successfully,” he said.
Chamroeun added that the event also serves the purpose of raising awareness and promoting care for breast cancer. To achieve this goal, the committee will collaborate with doctors to provide free breast cancer checkups from October 20 to 22.
“We’ve directed our efforts towards supporting women because encouraging women’s participation aligns with a fundamental principle of the national Olympic movement,” he explained.
“AIA has also identified a significant need in supporting women with breast cancer, as many affected women are unaware of their condition. We will establish efficient and cost-free breast cancer check up facilities,” he added.
The AIA Pink Run also has another philanthropic aspect. It seeks to raise funds to support humanitarian efforts and aid injured or elderly athletes. NOCC has organised several such activities over the years, hosting sporting events with a charitable purpose.
“We’re not solely focused on sports; we have broader objectives of supporting our society, especially women. The proceeds from many tourist events, sports and recreational activities have been dedicated to humanitarian activities.
“In essence, our assistance and the funds generated have been directed towards foundations that aid athletes. This reflects our commitment to performing acts of kindness for the betterment of our nation,” he added.
