Education is a key driver of national development, equipping individuals with knowledge and empowering them, and one author believes the foundation for a robust schooling lies in nurturing the intellectual and emotional capacities of students.
Recognising the significance of instructional psychology, Khin Vandy, a higher education mentor at the National Institute of Education (NIE), has authored a Khmer-language book titled Educational Psychology to complement the resources already available to educators.
The book, which was released on October 5, aims to furnish teachers with effective knowledge that will enable them to provide a high-quality educational experience.
A total of one thousand copies have been produced, with each priced at 36,000 riel (around $9).
He stressed the critical role of teachers in understanding and catering to the unique needs of each student in their classrooms, noting that this tool will equip them with insights into the specific requirements of each student.
“Teachers must discern each student’s distinct personalities and needs. Psychology serves as a crucial tool, enabling them to identify the requirements for student success. Teachers can then tailor their instruction to match students’ attitudes and comprehension levels,” he said.
Drawing inspiration from the wisdom of the Chinese philosopher Kong Qiu, he underscored the abundance of teachers in our society. However, he noted the scarcity of truly exceptional and effective educators.
He said academic excellence begins with competent teachers who not only possess the necessary knowledge but also understand how to impart it to students in a positive and non-coercive manner.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive and integrated course on educational psychology within schools. Such a course, he argued, would address the challenge of supplying teachers with superior capabilities.
According to Vandy, educational cognitive science gives teachers a profound understanding of developmental processes, limitations, abilities, teaching techniques and social interactions among students. It also fosters awareness of learners’ potential, interests, attitudes, capacities and inherent traits.
The book comprises seven chapters, with the initial chapter exploring the fundamental concepts of psychology, including its scope, key branches and applications in various fields , including education, counseling, medicine, business, criminal law, politics and the military.
The second chapter delves into the specifics of educational psychology, covering its meaning, nature, scope and practical applications.
Subsequent chapters focus on various aspects of human growth and development, particularly during childhood and adolescence.
Vandy made a commitment to publish at least one book annually, catering to both students and educators.
Since 2018, he has authored five books, encompassing topics such as teaching methods and strategies, educational philosophy and classroom management.
