Cambodia on May 6 hosted its first international kite flying event “SkyFest 2023”, held under the slogan “Khmers can fly”, to promote traditional culture and inspire the younger generation to pursue their dreams.

The event was officiated by Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) first vice-president Ly Thuch and Canopy Sands Development Co Ltd (CSD), a member of Prince Holding Group (PHG).

Held at CSD’s Bay of Lights project area in Preah Sihanouk province, this year’s SkyFest was also attended by kite enthusiasts from several other countries.

The event is hoped to lead to broader efforts to preserve the culture and heritage surrounding the kite-craftsmanship of the Khmer – Cambodia’s majority ethnic group – as well as to promote better understanding thereof among the younger generations and inspire them to appreciate that which is viewed as a representation of their ethnicity.

Thuch said that he was honoured to host the SkyFest. The event saw kite lovers from nine different countries, including Cambodia, display their talents.

“The theme, ‘Khmers can fly’, refers not only to our kites physically flying high, but also stands for the aspirations and dreams of the Cambodian people as we continue to move forward, towards a brighter future.

“The kite flying event is not only a celebration of our cultural heritage, but also presents the opportunity to learn from each other and build lasting relationships,” he emphasised.
