A Cambodian delegation from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, including many producers and artists, is heading to China for the 2023 Silk Road International Film Festival, scheduled for September.

The occasion is sparking excitement among producers in both countries as they discuss collaborations to make films together in Cambodia.

On August 8, Minister of Culture Phoeung Sakona met with Chinese delegates led by Lu Jing, a standing member of the Fujian provincial committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Their meeting was a significant event during their visit and participation in the Cambodia-China Culture and Film Exchange Week 2023.

Lu extended an invitation to Sakona and the Cambodian delegation to attend the 2023 Silk Road International Film Festival. This prestigious event is scheduled to be held in mid-September in Fuzhou city, in China’s Fujian province.

In response to the invitation, Sakona emphasised the importance of the existing relationship between the two nations.

“Under the strategic Belt and Road Initiative [BRI], our two countries are committed to further expanding cooperation in key areas, including culture.

Especially people-to-people connections, which is the foundation for building a community of common destiny through peaceful coexistence and development,” she was quoted as saying by the ministry.

Pok Borak, director of the ministry’s Cinema Department, on August 9 said Sakona had accepted the invitation.

“In case [Sakona] is on a mission or busy with other activities, she will also appoint a representative from the ministry to attend the event on her behalf,” he confirmed.

Borak noted the history of collaboration between Cambodia and China in the film sector, particularly Fuzhou, withthe two sides having been collaborating since 2019.

Regarding the recent Cambodia-China Film Exchange Week, Borak detailed how the two sides hosted a cooperative forum. He highlighted two key aspects of the collaboration.

“First is the opportunity for a joint co-production between Chinese and Cambodian filmmakers,” he said, adding that this was “very interesting among the parties”.

“The aim is to attract Chinese filmmakers to make movies in Cambodia, utilising Cambodian territory for film production,” he said.

On August 7, the Cambodia-China Culture and Film Week 2023 was launched, marking a significant moment in the cultural exchange between the two nations.

The initiative is designed to promote cultural dialogue and enhance connections between the people of both countries, coinciding with the celebration of their 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
