Owners of pubs and clubs in Dublin’s famous Temple Bar district are to close their doors immediately over the coronavirus outbreak, following criticism over large crowds gathering there over the weekend.

“In the interest of public health . . . the Temple Bar members will close their premises voluntarily with immediate effect,” the cooperative group said in a statement.

The Irish government is reported to be mulling enforcement powers to make sure the ban on indoor mass gatherings of more than 100 people applies to pubs and clubs.

Videos emerged on social media on Saturday showing people crowding into the drinking establishments, pouring out onto the streets and singing songs, provoking an online backlash.

Large crowds have been spotted at a number of events in the UK and Ireland seemingly in an act of defiance by the people. However authorities have been quick to remind people that gatherings can cause outbreaks.

They said that although young people who attend these events may be better equipted to fight the virus, they could be unknowingly passing it on to other people who will be less resilient to the disease.

They said the actions of the revelers were irresponsible and people should consider others before they look to attend gatheringsm, especially in crowded areas.
