Prime Minister Hun Sen on February 18 sent a condolence letter to Michiko Kanzaki for the loss of her husband Koji Kanzaki, a prominent Japanese philanthropist living in Cambodia, who greatly contributed to the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the Kingdom.

“My wife and I are very saddened and shocked to learn of the loss of your beloved husband, Mr Koji Kanzaki. We would like to express our deepest condolences to you and your family for this immense loss. May his soul rest in peace.” Hun Sen said in his letter.

“Koji Kanzaki had been a true friend of Cambodia. He dedicated 38 years of his life to promote ties between Japan and Cambodia and to the construction of schools, hospitals, and physical infrastructures in Cambodia.

“Even in his last days, he remained dedicated to the noble cause. During the courtesy call on me on 1 February 2022, he proposed to donate land to build a PKO [peacekeeping operations] park and offered his expertise on flood prevention in Cambodia,” he added.

The letter did not mention when Kanzaki passed away.

Back in 2017, the Japanese embassy said Kanzaki had been active both in Japanese and Cambodian society for many years, and had significantly contributed to the development and reconstruction of infrastructure in the Kingdom.

He had also worked to improve education, culture and the environment in Cambodia, through acts such as planting trees, providing scholarships to children whose families are unable to afford tuition, and helping build schools.

Kanzaki was one of the recipients of the 2017 Spring Conferment of Decorations, which are bestowed upon individuals of merit in recognition of their national or public services, and in honour of their distinguished accomplishments in various areas in society, the embassy said.

According to TV3 Asia report in 2014, Kanzaki was once the CEO of Camcal Co Ltd, which is no longer listed in the Ministry of Commerce’s business registry. As of February 19, however, the registry listed a “Koji Kanzaki” as chairman of Camjap Green Corp, although it was not immediately clear if this was the same person.
