Cambodia’s ambitious goal to germinate one million saplings is set to increase green coverage across the country, advancing its commitment to sustainability, according to Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth.
This objective forms the cornerstone of the Green Sprouts Initiative, which recently gained fresh momentum through a public-private partnership between the Ministry of Environment and telecom provider Smart Axiata.
The two parties formalised their collaboration by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on December 19, under the auspices of the environment minister and Ziad Shatara, CEO of Smart Axiata.
“This MoU represents a strong step toward fostering a greener Cambodia. Partnership with committed private organisation like Smart Axiata is critical to achieving our Pentagonal Strategy Phase 1, national sustainability goals, and the circular strategy on the environment,” explained Sophalleth.
The Green Sprouts Initiative aims to support environmental stewardship through tree planting movements, supported by the establishment of plant nurseries and sapling distribution efforts.
“Green sprouts will grow from the tree nurseries under the initiative of our environmental family, national and international partners, development partners and private sector companies,” added the minister.
The programme’s ambitious goal to germinate one million saplings is set to increase green coverage across Cambodia, contributing to climate mitigation and reforestation efforts.
As part of the agreement, Smart Axiata will leverage its extensive digital platforms – including app notifications, social media and SMS campaigns – to amplify national movements such as “Clean Cambodia! Green Cambodia! Khmer Can Do!” and “Today, I Will Not Use Plastic”.
The initiative underscores the necessity of broad public engagement in tackling climate change and environmental degradation.
“As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to lead by example, leveraging technology to address climate challenges and collaborating closely with the environment ministry and other stakeholders to build a more sustainable tomorrow,” said Shatara.
Sophalleth emphasised the long-term vision of the initiative, describing the Green Sprouts Initiative as a “legacy for future generations” and acknowledging the vital role of private-sector involvement in environmental responsibility.
