A medical team at the Koh Ker Health Center in Kulen district, Preah Vihear province, successfully saved the life of a two-month premature newborn and its mother on January 2.
According to Or Vandine, secretary of state and spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Chen An, a resident of Mrech Thmei village in Srayong commune who was pregnant for the first time, experienced abdominal pains and went into labour, despite her pregnancy only reaching 28 weeks.
After the expectant mother reported feeling pains, her family arranged for a two-wheeled, walk-behind tractor with a trailer to transport her to the health centre and alerted the Village Health Support Group (VHSG). However, due to the distance from her home to the health centre, she gave birth before the journey was complete.
Upon being notified of the situation by the VHSG, the head of the Koh Ker Health Centre dispatched an ambulance and medical staff to meet the woman and her family en route.
Vandine announced that the premature baby weighed just one kilogramme. After providing immediate medical assistance, including cutting the umbilical cord, the health centre staff made the decision to transfer both the mother and infant to Kantha Bopha Hospital in Siem Reap province for further monitoring.
“This compassionate act is a wonderful way to start the new year and reflects the dedication of healthcare providers to those in need of such life-saving interventions,” said Vandine.
She praised the medical team at the health centre for their commitment to saving the lives of the baby and mother and ensuring their safe transfer to Kantha Bopha Hospital.
