The Stung Treng Provincial Court has ordered the detention of two Cambodian men at the provincial prison, in connection with the illegal cross-border transportation of more than 47 kilogrammes of narcotics.

The two suspects, both 55-year-old Cambodian nationals, were identified as Thuch Vannak and You Kry.

They were arrested by a specialised anti-drug unit from Phnom Penh and the Northeast Regional Task Force in an April 2 operation at the Mekong River Bridge in Stung Treng town’s Pachong village, in Preah Bat commune.

The bust followed a careful investigation, explained an April 9 statement, released by the Anti-Drug Department.

The seized evidence includes 47.232 kilograms of what is suspected to be a heroin-like substance or opiate.

Following their arrest and interrogation, the two suspects and the evidence were referred to the provincial court by the Anti-Drug Department.

Chhum Seang Hak, provincial court spokesperson, confirmed on Wednesday, April 9 that the court had ordered both men to be held in pre-trial detention at the provincial prison, charged with the illegal cross-border trafficking of narcotics.

This case follows a recent major bust in Phnom Penh and Preah Sihanouk province. The late March operation saw more than 110 kilogrammes of drugs confiscated and eight individuals arrested, including two Cambodians, four Chinese nationals and two Burmese nationals.
