Restoration work on the second phase of Angkor Wat’s causeway is about 90 per cent complete, according to the APSARA National Authority (ANA). The work began in 2016 and is expected to be completed in 2024.

The ANA is working closely with specialists from the Tokyo-based Sophia University to restore the causeway. The preservation and strengthening of the causeway will enhance the value of Angkor Wat by maintaining its original form.

The first phase of the project restored 100m of the causeway, as has the second, said the ANA.

Sophia University has worked with the ANA since 1989. In addition to restoration work, it has provided human resource training in archeology and architecture, and carried out excavations at Banteay Kdei temple.

The "oldest" Catholic university in Japan has also offered heritage education programmes to the people living around the Angkor Archeological Park, and supported the establishment of the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum.
