Phnom Penh municipal governor Khuong Sreng has advised a technical team to call an emergency meeting to find a solution to the traffic jams at the intersection of Street 271 and Monivong-Hun Sen boulevards.
The meeting was held on March 3, following widely reported complaints from road users.
Municipal deputy governor Keut Chhe attended the meeting, and was joined by municipal authorities, traffic police and representatives of the company behind the ongoing construction of a mega interchange that would span the boulevards once completed.
The municipal administration advised the firm to narrow the barriers around the construction site to ease vehicular traffic flow. In addition, more traffic officers will be put on duty during rush hour to facilitate traffic flow.
The administration called on roadside vendors to discontinue selling their goods on the pavement, warning that legal action would ensue if they fail to heed the warning. Parking is also prohibited in the construction area.
“The Department of Public Works and Transport should consider establishing a passenger ferry from Koh Norea to Chroy Changvar, in addition to the existing Koh Norea-Koh Pich service. During rush hour, commuters should check Google maps for traffic flow, and if necessary, select an alternative route,” it said.
