The Ministry of Commerce's Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Repression directorate-general (CCF) collaborated with Helen Keller International (HKI) to hold a ceremony on June 16, marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

This inter-governmental body operates under the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Food Standards Programme, according to the CCF.

The CCF highlighted that the 60th anniversary of the Codex presents a significant opportunity for Cambodia to promote awareness of food safety and quality in line with the Food Safety Law.

This law was signed and put into effect on June 8 last year by King Norodom Sihamoni. Additionally, the event coincided with the celebration of the fifth anniversary of World Food Security Day, which Cambodia will host in the future.

Cambodia, one of the 188 UN member states, joined the Codex Alimentarius Commission in 1974 and has actively participated in the establishment of international food standards.

The CCF emphasised that the Codex's core values lie in setting standards based on scientific foundations and intended purpose, while promoting inclusion, cooperation, unity, and transparency. The Cambodian government also pursues strategic goals of enhancing productivity, economic efficiency, excellence, innovation, and standardisation of goods, services, and quality management improvements.

Furthermore, this year, Cambodia received support from FAO through the Codex Trust Fund-2 for a three-year period (2023-2025). This support enables Cambodia to reinforce its national regulatory framework and enhance the professional capacity of relevant institutions. The aim is to acquire the necessary knowledge for effective participation in international codec activities and safeguard national interests.

Additionally, Cambodia seeks to promote Cambodian food products in line with international standards, facilitating the export of commodities to major global markets.
