The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) will run a training course on mine clearance technology for Ukrainian deminers in Cambodia this month, as landmines on Ukrainian territory now pose a serious threat to civilians.
The Cambodian government and the Japanese government have provided support to CMAC for running the humanitarian mine clearance training course for deminers from Ukraine.
In a January 13 press release, CMAC said that the problem of landmines and unexploded ordnance due to the war on the territory of Ukraine has been posing a serious danger to civilians and the problem was also an obstacle to the millions of Ukrainian refugees who intend to return to their homes now or in the future.
The press release read that the work of clearing mines and explosive remnants of war was a necessary and urgent humanitarian action to guarantee the safety of the Ukrainian people and support the process of rebuilding homes and infrastructure and clearing land for agriculture.
CMAC said that the work clearing the mines and the munitions built people's confidence in safety and improved their livelihoods, but the work takes time and patience.
“Based on the decisions of the leaders of the two countries, we will prepare training for mine action officers from the Emergency Services Unit of Ukraine (SESU) in Cambodia in January, 2023 on the use of demining equipment, especially the Advanced Landmine Imaging System (ALIS) which is made in Japan,” CMAC said.
