Three young representatives from Cambodia secured second place in a recent “machine learning in health” competition, featuring 92 participating nations, according to the state-run Techo Startup Centre (TSC).

Meanwhile, Startup Cambodia – a national programme led by the Ministry of Economy and Finance to “support local startups and build a vibrant entrepreneurship ecosystem” in the country – has invited potential candidates to partake in the inaugural season of the “Youth Essay Writing Contest”, providing an opportunity for individuals to express their personal perspective on Cambodia’s digital revolution. This essay contest is organised by Startup Cambodia in collaboration with the TSC.

The centre, located within the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), announced last week via social media that the three-person team achieved second place in the Kaggle Competition for Machine Learning in Health. This international contest was part of the Oxford Machine Learning Summer School (OXML 2023).

“Congratulations to Buoy Rina, Phy Vitou and Sov Kimkhung from the ‘Yet Another AI Team’ [YAAT] representing Cambodia, who secured the second place in the Kaggle Competition for Machine Learning in Health,” it declared.

According to the announcement, Rina is an applied artificial intelligence (AI) researcher from the TSC, Vitou a software developer at INDEED, and Kimkhung a business intelligence analyst at Phillip Bank.

Organised by AI for Global Goals in partnership with Oxford Deep Medicine and CIFAR, the OXML 2023 attracted around 1,100 participants from 92 countries.

About 80 per cent of these participants hail from academia, the TSC reported on its social media page.

Along with celebrating the successful team, the TSC urged candidates to participate in the “Youth Essay Writing Contest”, open for submissions until July 30.

The essay contest also benefits from financial support provided by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications and the Capacity Building Research and Development Fund (CBRD Fund).

“The programme aims to provide all students, innovators and the public the opportunity to express their insights and ideas concerning the digital revolution for inclusion in their writings. This provides a chance to win the award,” stated the TSC.

As per the announcement, selected candidates will gain the opportunity to share their perspectives on Cambodia’s digital transformation.

Entrants are encouraged to write from the viewpoint of a student, startup founder, business owner or policymaker, addressing the challenges and opportunities that Cambodians may encounter when utilising digital platforms, goods or services.
