The government has announced a clean tourist downtown competition for 2024, with the goal of identifying and honouring the Kingdom’s cleanest, most attractive urban areas.

An August 5 announcement explained that a May 31 letter signed by Ken Satha, secretary of state at the Council of Ministers, had approved the plan.

“The government has agreed in principle to allow the National Committee for Clean City Evaluation to hold a clean tourist downtown competition. It will identify the most attractive tourist destinations in major provincial destinations,” said the letter.

The letter was addressed to Minister of Tourism Thong Khon, who also heads the National Committee for Clean City Evaluation.

It suggested that the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Interior and relevant ministries and institutions cooperate to run the competition for three years. The first assessments will take place in 2025, so candidates will have a year to strengthen their ability to meet the inspection criteria.
