Dangkor district police sent a construction contractor to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Tuesday over the death of a worker who either fell or was pushed off the building he was working on.

Dangkor district police chief Nouv Tith said police questioned the 35-year-old contractor over the death of the worker following complaints from the victim’s family.

“In this case, I only called one person for questioning. I am not sure whether he committed murder or not,” said Tith, who did not identify the contractor.

Kraing Pongro commune police chief Toeb Bun Then identified the victim as Sou Ravet, 32.

He said locals near the building reported the incident to police on Friday after Ravet fell to his death.

He said police went to the scene and carried out investigations before handing the victim’s body to his family for the last rites. No suspicion was raised to doubt death by misadventure.

However, the family filed a complaint to police after the funeral, claiming the victim may have been pushed off the building after receiving an anonymous tip-off that he was beaten by a few people with iron rods before being pushed.

“The victim’s family filed a complaint saying the victim was pushed off the building by someone, so we need to act. They provided the name of a suspect, and we called that person in for questioning,” he said.

Dr Norng Sovannroath, who examined the body at the district police station, said the victim fell from the building.

Dangkor district police chief Chim Sitha said police collected as much information as they could before sending the case to court.

“We sent the suspect to the court and the court will decide on whether to charge him or not,” he said.
