The Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) has unveiled the local theme for this year’s World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, slated for May 8: “Together with the CRC for a Healthy and Resilient Community”.
CRC first deputy secretary-general Men Neary Sopheak spoke to reporters after a meeting on February 27, noting that the theme mirrors Cambodia’s challenges.
“This day commemorates the campaigns of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement while highlighting the CRC’s humanitarian achievements, progress and missions throughout the year. Funds raised from both national and international donors support these efforts,” she said.
Neary Sopheak reiterated the humanitarian organisation’s call for donations, be they in-kind or financial, to sustain their vital work addressing vulnerabilities in the country.
She also outlined plans for the CRC to utilise the day to boost community awareness on hygiene, healthy habits such as nutrition and exercise, access to primary healthcare and community involvement in combating climate change.
CRC treasurer general Ouk Maly stated that meeting attendees had reviewed and endorsed various documents for the coming event, including press releases, banner content, slogans and other tasks leading up to this year’s celebration.
“This year’s theme aims to bolster community resilience against challenges like physical and mental health concerns, stemming from war, economic crises and climate change,” she added.
In a separate press release, the CRC appealed for donations from individuals and organisations to bolster its efforts in poverty alleviation, public health promotion and supporting community-led solutions to climate variability. This initiative seeks to ensure that CRC programmes continue to assist vulnerable populations in an inclusive manner.
