Prime Minister Hun Sen said that Cambodia would return the remains of the last 49 fallen Cambodian soldiers that lie in Vietnam to home soil in the near future.
He made the remarks while meeting with secretary of the central committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and president of the central committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Do Van Chien on July 29.
“The coming year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the Cambodian Army. I and the relevant ministries will prepare to return the remains of the fallen Cambodian heroes to their homeland,” the prime minister announced in a social media post.
In a commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge last month held in Koh Thmar X16 in Memot district, Tbong Khmum Province, Hun Sen said Vietnam had given Cambodia a plot of land to preserve the remains of the 49 fighters in Vietnam because their families could not be found.
The Facebook post announced that Vietnam was also taking back the remains of those members of the Vietnamese Volunteer Army that perished in Cambodia. It is also time for Cambodia to take back the remains of its national salvation front fighters.
Hun Sen requested that the remains be placed in the area of Koh Thmar X16 because their families could not be found, and that every day on June 20, people would come to pay their respects and commemorate the anniversary of the beginning of his journey to overthrow the Khmer Rouge regime.
