Minister of Education, Youth and Sport Hang Chuon Naron led a Cambodian delegation to the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting in Luang Prabang, Laos, to discuss the post-2025 ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Strategic Plan.

The meeting was held on March 24, and chaired by the Laos ASCC representative, as Laos is the current ASEAN chair.

In attendance were the ASCC Council ministers and the ASEAN secretary-general, as well as representatives of the ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste, which currently holds observer status of the bloc, according to the ministry’s social media.

During the meeting, the participants held joint discussions on the development of a strategic plan for the ASCC post-2025 and exchanged views on four key points.

The first was to address the readiness of the body to address the trends that the sector will face in the next five, 10 and 20 years. The second aimed to outline strategies to attract the participation of ASCC dialogue partners and other stakeholders.

The third examined means of strengthening ASEAN mechanisms to improve the well-being and quality of life of ASEAN people post-2025.

Finally, the attendees laid out strategies to promote the key areas of the environment, resilience, sustainability and ASEAN identity in the next 20 years.

Chuon Naron, who also serves as the national representative for the ASCC Council, made several important recommendations to the council, including the need to focus on skills and technology for youth, education, climate change, preparedness and preparation for an aging population, and environmental protection.

Kong Samneang, head of the Federation of Education Services in Cambodia, said it would be good if a campaign to develop technology skills for young people and promote information about education and climate change were successful, as it would enhance the quality of education of students across the ASEAN region.

“If the ASCC Strategic Plan post-2025 is implemented effectively, it will expand cooperation in the field of education across the bloc. This will give young Cambodians the opportunity to learn from developed countries and become valuable human resources in the future,” he added.

The 30th meeting of the ASCC Council, held in the Indonesian capital Jakarta in August 2023, agreed to highlight several documents.

The post-2025 plan is concerned with climate change, gender equality and family development, early childhood care and education, as well as sustainable resilience.
