The Ministry of Health announced the recovery of the last Covid-19 patient in the country, meaning the Kingdom was considered Covid-19 free as of June 7.
According to the ministry’s June 7 report, in the 31 days from May 7 to June 6, Cambodia had not recorded any new Covid-19 cases.
“As of June 7, Cambodia had recorded a total of 136,262 Covid-19 cases, including 133,206 recoveries and 3,056 deaths. These figures mean Cambodia no longer has a single Covid-19 patient,” the report said.
Or Vandine, health ministry secretary of state and spokeswoman, said on June 7 that Cambodia had brought the Covid-19 situation under control thanks to the “wise leadership and guidance of Prime Minister Hun Sen”.
“I believe that the response to the coronavirus in Cambodia was exemplary ... The [premier’s] most important and wise decision was to focus on vaccinating people all across the country,” she said,
Vandine, who is also head of the national Covid-19 vaccination committee, called on the public to remain vigilant regardless.
“Please do not forget that – even in the context of Cambodia which has not detected any new cases or deaths – we must not neglect our vaccinations. We have to maintain herd immunity, and keeping our own vaccinations up to date is a large part of that, especially if we want to avoid another large community outbreak,” she said.
She said timely Covid-19 vaccinations had made a big contribution and enabled Cambodia to reopen fully.
“We have to bear in mind that vaccines are an important tool in saving human lives. That’s why the prime minister made the call to continue vaccinations. On June 9, we will begin vaccinating frontline medical staff and other target groups with a fifth dose,” she said.
According to the ministry, 94.04 per cent of the Kingdom’s estimated population of 16 million had received at least a first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine by June 3.
More than nine million people had received their third dose and over 2.5 million had gotten their fourth.
