Five Cambodia Airport employees were sent to the Siem Reap Provincial Court under suspicion of attempting to steal valuables from suitcases belonging to tourists.

Sen Sun Day, the chief of operations at Siem Reap International Airport, was only able to confirm that five employees had been arrested but said he could not divulge more as it was up to technical officials to release information regarding the case.

“Please contact the authorities for information, I do not dare speak because I’m afraid of affecting their work,” Day said.

Siem Reap provincial police chief Tith Narong told The Post that the men had allegedly colluded to break open baggage on several occasions but he was yet to be made aware the court’s ruling.

“I do not remember the number of cases . . . there are numerous instances when tourists reported lost belongings and issued a claim. Some tourists complained that they had lost their belongings and others said nothing,” Narong said.

The men were arrested after a guest submitted a claim with “clear evidence”, added Narong.

Siem Reap Provincial Court spokesman Yin Srang did not go into the details of the case and only said: “The court was in the process of questioning the suspects.”

A police report obtained by The Post said the five suspects were detained on Tuesday for an aggravated offence.

The report identified the suspects as all men aged 40, 37, 32, 31, and 28.
