The Ministry of Environment is working to develop a plan for the conservation and infrastructure development of Phnom Khnang Phsar and Khnang Sampov, two natural tourism sites within the Cardamom National Park. The new plans follow the recommendations of Prime Minister Hun Manet, who hiked the mountains on March 8 and conducted an on-site inspection.
On March 10, the prime minister shared that before leaving Phnom Khnang Phsar on Saturday, he met with the head and deputy head of the Taing Bompong Community-Based Ecotourism site to learn about the living conditions of people in the community, as well as hear practical requests for assistance.
“After observing the situation firsthand and listening to community representatives, I have assigned the Minister of Environment and the governor of Kampong Speu province the responsibility of preserving and maintaining the Phnom Khnang Phsar and Khnang Sampov tourism areas in the Cardamom National Park,” said the prime minister, via social media.
Additionally, he instructed the environment ministry and provincial authorities to conduct studies on the construction of infrastructure and services such as roads, restrooms, food stalls and emergency response facilities.
These improvements must meet appropriate standards and serve the local community by enhancing the tourism experience.
Furthermore, the two institutions were directed to improve the water supply in the Phnom Khnang Phsar area and ensure sufficient water for the local population living at the foot of the mountain.
Environment ministry of spokesperson Khvay Atitya noted that following the prime minister’s directive, environment minister Eang Sophalleth is preparing a development plan.
“Today, the minister is assessing this task. He is carefully considering an action plan based on the prime minister’s recommendations. He will also meet with the teams responsible for infrastructure planning, including water and electricity services,” he said.
In addition, Manet has instructed the tourism ministry to work with the environment ministry, provincial authorities, tourism operators and local communities to further promote eco-tourism in the area.
This initiative aims to enhance community capacity for providing tourism services and contribute to improving local livelihoods.
Atitya added that the relevant institutions will meet soon to discuss the next phases of development, prioritising which projects should be implemented first.
Phnom Khnang Phsar, located at the intersection of Koh Kong, Kampong Speu and Pursat provinces, is often referred to as a “Natural Paradise”.
The site attracts adventure-seeking tourists, both domestic and international. The area is known for its lush forests, towering mountains and beautiful grasslands, as well as its rich biodiversity, including rare wildlife species.
