The government will today submit its second report to the UN Human Rights Council as part of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process that takes stock of human rights progress in each UN member state.

Governments are required to report to the council every four and a half years on what actions they have taken to improve human rights and fulfil their international obligations.

A statement released by the Press and Quick Reaction Unit says that the report was approved by the Council of Ministers, chaired by Prime Minister Hun Sen, on Friday.

Cambodia submitted its first report in 2009.

“After that meeting, other states recommended 91 points. Some have been implemented by Cambodia and others are being implemented,” the statement says.

Om Yentieng, head of the government’s human rights committee, could not be reached.

The government will send delegates to the UN in Geneva to defend the reports in February 2014.
