The Indian embassy in Cambodia has announced the implementation of a “Quick Impact Project” which will establish a new Science Library in Battambang province’s Ratanak Mondul district.

The embassy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation on February 17.

According to the embassy, the project seeks to establish a science library which will feature a diverse collection of science books, scientific instruments and engaging design elements.

“The library is intended to inspire children to develop a passion for reading, exploration and hands-on scientific experimentation. Through promotional campaigns and outreach efforts, the initiative aims to attract the involvement of teachers, parents and local authorities to foster a vibrant and accessible science learning environment,” it said.

Indian ambassador Vanlalvawna Bawitlung attended the signing ceremony.

He emphasised the increasing importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

He highlighted his belief that the new facility would serve as a bridge to enhance learning opportunities for students by providing them with a conducive space to explore and experiment.

The ambassador also noted that India's development cooperation philosophy is rooted in principles of mutual growth and partnership, ensuring that projects taken up align with the developmental goals of partner countries.

Science minister Hem Vanndy welcomed the MoU as a significant step toward strengthening cooperation in science, technology and innovation. He also shared the ministry’s commitment to exploring additional collaboration opportunities under the Quick Impact Project framework.

Vanndy also expressed his belief that for the bright and promising students of Ratanak Mondul, the Science Library would serve as an incubator for their future success.

Under the Quick Impact Project Scheme of the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC), India provides grant assistance for 10 projects annually in Cambodia, focusing on socio-economic development in key sectors such as education, health, sanitation, women’s empowerment and agriculture.

To date, India has sanctioned 60 Quick Impact Projects in Cambodia, with 42 successfully completed and 18 currently in progress.
