The Asia Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) has presented the Ministry of Information with the AIBD Appreciation Award 2023, in response to its “excellent” cooperation in the fight against misinformation and fake news over the past two decades.

The award was presented to information minister Neth Pheaktra by AIBD secretariat-director Philomena Gnanapragasam on October 26 at the ministry headquarters in Phnom Penh, according to a ministry social media post.

The post quoted Gnanapragasam as suggesting that the ministry continue to work closely with the AIBD. The institute pledged to continue its assistance to the ministry through human resource development training, as well as in the fight against fake news.

Pheaktra shared his appreciation for the close cooperation between the two bodies, and pledged to continue to support the institute.

Gnanapragasam also noted that the ministry premises would be an extremely suitable training location, and agreed to dispatch AIBD trainers.

She congratulated Pheaktra on taking office under the seventh government mandate, and expressed hopes that he would continue to provide cooperation to combat disinformation.

An AIBD press release said that it was proud to acknowledge Cambodia’s exceptional dedication and unwavering support in the 22 years it has been a member of the institute. The information ministry was named as the recipient of the award at the 21st AIBD General Conference in Balaclava, Mauritius, on October 2.

The release explained that the award recognised Cambodia’s consistent efforts in furthering AIBO’s mission, strengthening regional collaboration in the broadcasting sector, and contributing to the growth of the media industry in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Cambodia’s partnership with the AIBD has been marked by active participation, leadership and unwavering support. The country’s consistent engagement and commitment to AIBD’s mission have been essential in advancing the broadcasting and media industry in the Asia-Pacific region,” it said.

It noted that Cambodia hosted the 16th Asia Media Summit (AMS) in Siem Reap in June 2019, which was attended by more than 500 delegates from across the globe. During the pandemic, Cambodia was also elected for the first time as the vice-chair, garnering support from more than 14 countries.

The elections were presided over by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Minister of Information and Communications Technology of Papua New Guinea Timothy Masiu and the hosts of the general conference, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
