The Ministry of Information and Phnom Penh International University (PPIU) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing their collaboration to improve the quality and professionalism of human resources in the information sector.

The new initiative seeks to keep pace with the rapid and continuous advancements in the field, driven by modern technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

The signing ceremony was presided over by Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra and Tep Kolap, president of the university, on December 4, according to a December 5 press release by the ministry.

During the event, Pheaktra emphasised that human resources are a critical factor in the development of Cambodia's information and communication sectors.

He highlighted the essential role universities, such as PPIU, play in training and preparing skilled professionals by developing academic programmes and providing practical training in information and communication studies. This effort aims to advance the quality and quantity of human resources in Cambodia's information sector.

The minister also stressed the importance of creating comprehensive and modern curricula to equip the next generation with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in this field. Opportunities will be provided at the undergraduate, associate degree and professional levels for those interested in pursuing this career path.

“This partnership will contribute to building a skilled and knowledgeable workforce in Cambodia’s information and communication sector to contribute to enhancing public trust in the field of information,” he said.

The programmes run through this collaboration will focus on both theoretical knowledge and practical application.

They will extend beyond traditional journalism, writing and broadcasting to include training in multimedia journalism and key communication disciplines, aligning with the demands of the digital era.

Core subjects will include journalism, television production, digital media, public relations, marketing communications, media systems and communication studies.

Kolap expressed her commitment to ensuring the smooth implementation of the collaboration and to launching the new programmes as soon as possible. She also outlined plans to guarantee the sustainability of the programme through strategic planning.

In addition to its partnership with the university, the ministry relaunched its Journalism and Professional Communication Training Centre in late 2023 as part of its efforts to develop professional skills.

The ministry intends to expand collaborations with other stakeholders to further promote the growth of Cambodia's information and communication sector, contributing to the sustainable development of society and the economy.

According to the ministry, Cambodia has more than 2,000 registered media organisations and approximately 10,000 journalists.
