The government of Japan has provided two grants to support Cambodia’s continued demining efforts.

An exchange of notes ceremony was held this morning, March 20, for the grants, which have a total value of $10.4 million. The notes were signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn and Japanese ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi.

Both grants will provide the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC).

One will provide demining equipment worth $8.3 million, including a brush cutter and a demining machine manufactured by Japanese companies.

The second grant, worth $2.1 million, will enable CMAC to construct a training complex and outreach facility, explained a press release from the Japanese embassy.

Japan has supported landmine and UXO clearance efforts in Cambodia since 1990 and continues to do so, under its Economic and Social Development Programme.

“We hope this support will enhance the efficiency of clearance activities and help providing a safer environment for the Cambodian people. I should also mention that these projects will embody the ‘Japan-Cambodia Landmine Initiative’, which is one of the ‘Three New Cooperation Approaches’ which were announced on the occasion of the Japanese foreign minister’s visit to Cambodia last July,” said Ueno.

He noted that he considers the Kingdom as one of the global leaders in mine action, with Cambodian experts having long experience and high level of expertise.

They have provided technical guidance for demining activities to several third party countries, including Ukraine.

“We hope that Japan’s support will further strengthen Cambodia’s demining activities and help it to share its expertise with other countries,” he added, emphasising Japan’s commitment to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

“The assistance for the above two projects will contribute to Cambodia’s national strategy towards achieving the goal of a mine-free Cambodia by 2030. Furthermore, the project also reaffirms Japan's steadfast friendship,” said a foreign ministry statement.
