A promising glow of development descends on the northeastern province of Ratanakkiri as representatives from Japanese firm MinebeaMitsumi discuss an investment in smart public street lighting.

A meeting took place on July 4 between Ratanakkiri provincial governor Nhem Sam Oeun and the firm’s representative, who was identified only as Aoki.

During this discussion, Aoki highlighted the company’s extensive operations in Japan, and its planned investment in Ratanakkiri’s smart LED public lighting project.

“We look forward to collaborating with provincial administration to further contribute to the development of this province,” said Aoki.

In response, governor Sam Oeun conveyed the provincial authorities’ enthusiasm about the project, recognising Ratanakkiri’s untapped potential for development, abundant in natural resources, and the rich cultural heritage of minority ethnic groups.

“The provincial administration fully supports Japanese firms wishing to invest in Ratanakkiri province. We are committed to welcoming and facilitating such endeavours,” he said.

Ho Vandy, an adviser to the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), praised MinebeaMitsumi for its long-term vision. He noted the growth of Japanese investment in the tourism sector, particularly in Siem Reap, and expressed confidence in the anticipated boost to the northeastern provinces of Cambodia from this investment.

“We are confident that Japanese investment in Ratanakkiri will provide valuable lessons, particularly in preserving the cultural traditions of ethnic minority groups. This will enhance investment in natural attractions as well,” he said.

He added that Japanese investors often emphasise the virtues of their projects, rather than merely focusing on the profits. He believes this approach invariably benefits local people, who receive a standard of service reflective of Japan’s high-quality standards.
