Two Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) ships, the Shimakaze (TV-3521) and Suzunami (DD-114), will dock in Cambodia during a cadets’ training cruise later this month.

“The cruise aims to provide cadets with on-the-job training opportunities, and cultivate the qualities required of officers,” said the JMSDF, in a February 5 press release.

It will also develop an international sense through sailing in the South China Sea, and promote friendship and goodwill through visiting countries and contribute to the realization of a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’,” it added.

The Shimukaze is a Hatekaze-class guided missile cruiser, while the Suzunami is a Takanami-class destroyer.

The embassy of Japan in Cambodia announced that the two vessels will visit the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port from February 22-24. 

“During their visit to Cambodia, a reception will be held for the Japanese sailors at the Ream Naval Base on 22 February,” the embassy said.

During the cruise, the ships will also call at Brunei and Vietnam, according to JMSDF.
