In the past six months, the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has provided physical checkups to more than 280,000 Cambodians workers and over 40,000 foreigners, according to a report from the ministry’s Department of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH).
According to the OSH, from September 2023 to February this year, OSH issued physical examination certificates to a total of 286,254 Cambodian citizens and 44,083 foreigners.
In addition, the department provided occupational safety and health training to 1,428 staff, delegates, including 829 women. In addition to physical examinations, it also ran training courses for workers, management and unions at several large factories and other enterprises.
Ministry spokesperson Katta Orn said that through these activities, the department is striving to increase capacity through practical work, as well as participation in workshops and training sessions.
He added that the labour ministry has launched an action plan for 2024 to improve occupational safety and health for all workers, in line with the phase one of the government’s Pentagonal Strategy, and the Strategic Plan for Employment and Vocational Training 2024-2028.
“This includes infrastructure development, as well as the implementation of occupational safety and health management systems, at the national and sub-national levels, through cooperation and capacity development,” said Orn.
The implementation of legal frameworks and policies are consistent with national standards and comply with the law, through qualified and effective occupational safety and health inspections.
“Increasing cooperation between employers and workers on occupational safety and health in the formal sector, especially in high-risk areas, will improve the work environment and increase productivity,” said Orn.
“The ministry will continue to promote a safe and healthy working environment in small and medium enterprises, the informal economy and in rural areas, as well as increase awareness of occupational safety and health,” he added.
Eliminating child labour and forced labour, as well as the prevention of HIV/AIDS, drug use, infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases in the workplace is also an active part of ministry’s role, according to Orn.
