A delegation from the Laos National Assembly is currently visiting Cambodia for a series of meetings with their counterparts in the Kingdom. Through the visit, the Laos delegation aims to strengthen friendship, solidarity and cooperation in all fields, in particular, between the two legislatures.
Khamchanh Sodapaseuth, member of the standing committee of the Lao National Assembly, led a delegation to a meeting with Cheam Yeap, first vice-president of the Cambodian National Assembly (NA), on February 26, said an NA press release.
It explained that Sodapaseuth was seeking more understanding about the work of the NA Commission on education, religious affairs, culture and tourism, with a view to exchanging experiences in the development of these sectors.
During their meeting, Yeap briefed the Laos delegation on the political, economic and social situation of Cambodia, highlighting recent several recent successes of state institutions, such as last year’s national elections. He described the elections as smooth, free, accurate and recognised and supported by national and international observers.
Yeap also explained the Cambodian government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and outlined its successful measures.
“Through our hosting of the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and the 43rd ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Cambodia achieved many great successes on the international stage in 2022. The Kingdom also hosted the 32nd SEA Games, with an overwhelmingly positive response from the international community,” he said.
Regarding the work of the NA, Yeap claimed that in the past five months, the 7th legislature has proudly fulfilled its role of serving the nation and its people, with excellent results.
“In addition to fulfilling their responsibilities to discuss and approve laws, our members have also been out in our communities, discussing our work with the public. In addition, NA president Khuon Sudary has spearheaded a number of NA diplomatic efforts,” he said.
The official visit by the Laos delegation is scheduled to run from February 25 to 29.
During their time in the Kingdom, delegation members were scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Pa Socheatvong, chairman of the NA Commission on education, religious affairs, culture and tourism. They will also meet for discussions with Lou Kim Chhun, CEO of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.
In addition, visits to the Royal Palace, Wat Phnom, the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone and Cambrew Ltd (Angkor Brewery) are on the agenda.
