The Ministry of Health, in an announcement earlier this morning (July 24), called on people not to consume two brands of wine, including Royal Health Wine EST: 2005, both the 500ml and 100ml bottles, and CHL Natural Health Wine 150ml.
It stated that the wines, made by a company in Svay Rieng province, contain high levels of sildenafil – an erectile dysfunction medication – which can be seriously harmful to the health of drinkers and may even endanger lives.
The ministry said that after conducting research, its officials cooperated with relevant institutions and authorities to conduct raids at two locations, including the production site and a liquor store in Phnom Penh, taking legal action against those involved.
“To avoid endangering the health of consumers, the ministry calls on all citizens not to consume the above three types of wine and to stop distributing or selling these liquors,” the ministry said.
It called on the competent authorities in the capital and provinces to continue to cooperate in educating and preventing the distribution or sale of these wines in strict accordance with legal procedures.
“The ministry hopes that the people, vendors and relevant authorities cooperate in implementing this announcement effectively,” it said.
