The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and Post Media Co Ltd on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost education in Cambodia. Post Media is the owner of The Phnom Penh Post which is published in English and Khmer.
In a ceremony presided over by minister Hang Chuon Naron, the MoU was signed by the ministry’s Department of Information and ASEAN Affairs director Seng Janine and Post Media publisher and CEO Ly Tayseng.
Based on the agreement, The Post will provide a page in its English and Khmer versions to the ministry to publish education-related articles on the first Wednesday of each month or once every two weeks depending on its requirements.
The goal is to provide educational information while many students are dealing with disruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Chuon Naron expressed his appreciation on the MoU signing. He said Covid-19 requires cooperation from relevant parties to enhance educational opportunities for students.
“We must work together to introduce new ways to deliver education and education-related information to students due to the challenges caused by Covid-19,” he said.
He said the ministry has expanded great efforts to find effective tools for students to continue their education in urban and rural areas, including the successful implementation of digital education.
Tayseng agreed with Chuon Naron that the socio-economic challenges that arose due to the Covid-19 pandemic have affected people throughout the world.
On its part, he said Post Media has cooperated with various business sectors in Cambodia to help boost their prospects and contribute to the economy.
He said the MoU is important because education is key to the Kingdom’s development. “We have enough resources to support the education sector in Cambodia and are more than happy to do so,” he said.
As a publisher, Tayseng also said he noticed that some government officials dared not speak with reporters. He said this is unfortunate because only when officials communicate with the media can their messages be accurately disseminated to the public.
“Officials, especially from the various ministries should speak more and not be afraid of the media.
“The media is not here to make life difficult for anyone. We are here to provide accurate news and information so that the dissemination of fake news and misinformation is reduced,” he stressed.
