The National Assembly (NA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP) to promote cooperation with IPTP members on peace-building, war prevention, and reconstruction following wars.
An NA delegation led by recently-appointed Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Information, and Media chairman Suos Yara attended the Ninth Session of the IPTP – the international parliament of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace (GCTP) – in Abu Dhabi and Dubai of the UAE from March 25-29, the NA said in a March 31 statement.
The GCTP held the session at the Federal National Council’s headquarters, presided over by the council’s president, Ahmed bin Muhammad al-Jarwan, and his IPTP counterpart Margarita Restrepo.
The meeting was attended by representatives from more than 80 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, as well as national and international NGOs involved in the promotion of values such as tolerance, peace and coexistence.
Yara also met with al-Jarwan to discuss the promotion of ties and cooperation between Cambodia and the UAE and expanding relations with other IPTP members. The areas of cooperation covered include the promotion of tolerance and peace, war prevention and conflict resolution, as well as reconstruction and restoration following wars.
The Cambodian lawmaker highlighted five “necessary” elements to achieve sustainable peace – multi-lateral cooperation; youth development; collaboration between the government, civil society, and private sector; respect for differing ideas and beliefs; and the promotion of research and cooperation between think tanks.
Suos Yara could not be reached for further comment on the MoU on April 3.
