Mines, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and related items weighing 38.567 tonnes have been removed from a shipwreck site in the Mekong River at southeastern Kandal province after about a year of operations.
Ministry of National Defence permanent secretary of state General Neang Phat admires the efforts of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) operators and military personnel involved in the operations at the site, off of Peam Reang island of Loeuk Dek district, according to a post on CMAC director-general Heng Ratana’s Facebook post.
Launched in March 2022, the operation covers 300ha, divided into three zones – dry land, and low- and high-risk areas, it said, confirming that the aforementioned tonnage figure includes 36 mines, 2,671 items of UXO, two guns, and 6.613 tonnes of associated metal fragments.
